Another impossibly sunny day west of town. Nora and I found this beautiful scene in our wanderings around the countryside. She set up her oil paints and I set up my pastels for a few hours of painting bliss. We must have been a bit of an oddity painting out in the crops because we were visited by all of the farmers in the area. I think they wanted to see our work but they also wanted to make sure that we weren’t hurting their neighbor’s property. They were so friendly and proud of the beauty of their land.

I walk by this field almost every night with my Aussie, Roxy, and never thought anything of it. Then one afternoon last week the sun was low and the light coming though the fence looked fantastic. I ran back home and got my pastels and Roxy and I spent a great hour painting together.

We’re in the Dog Days of Summer. Very little rain and the crops are all turning luscious golden colors. This field drew my attention and i thought it would be interesting to do a painting without an obvious focal point. More about atmosphere and the feeling of the place.

I made my annual trip to the Toledo Botanical Gardens last weekend. It really is a pretty site filled with all sorts of flowers and bushes. This little bridge caught my eye and I sat down and did a quick watercolor study of it. Lots of people stopped by to comment. Their were 6 weddings on the grounds that day!

Our garden is starting to die down now but the Black Eyed Susans are still strong and colorful. The Sedum that surround them will be turning rosey soon as fall draws closer. It’s nice to have beautiful subjects to paint in your own back yard!

My friend Mary Beth Koeze has the most wonderful gardens and she is a fantastic pastel artist. So she has doubly inspired me! I took some reference photos of her Oak Leaf Hydrangeas this summer. I’ve been working on this pastel painting for a week or so and just finished it.

Its always a challenge to know when you should stop and not continue to overwork a painting with useless detail. I read an article about one artist who said your painting is usually finished when you think you are 80% done

I think this is my favorite Treescape pastel painting so far. I really liked being able to capture the light filtering through the leaves of the tree. It has almost an abstract feel to it yet you know exactly what it is. This should be available at one of my galleries soon and I am working on a couple more in the series.

Saturday morning the skies were clear and there were beautiful dark shadows. I found an old abandoned house south of town. The old rattan furniture was still on the porch as if the owners might come out any moment, even though they had been gone for years…

This is a larger plein air piece that I painted during the Saline Paint-Out. Char and Taylor Jacobsen offered us their beautiful Saline Mills as inspiration and I fell in love with this little walk through their flower garden.

Thought I’d post another one of the plein air watercolor paintings I did on our main street in Saline. I love all these old homes and the tons of history behind them. They’ve started renovating a lot of them and they just sparkle from the curb!
