I spent an afternoon a while ago Gallup Park in Ann Arbor. The fields and trees had already begun their autumn color shifts and the water was a beautiful shade of blue gray. I painted this quick watercolor landscape study in about 15 minutes and then moved on to do a few more.

One last Hydrangea pastel painting to see summer off. I really fell in love with these flowers this year, and when the next crop matures, I will explore them further. We are having a beautiful falI, but I probably won’t get in a lot more plein air painting. It’s serious studio time now. I think I will focus on my pastel Treescape series….

This is the view from our window in Waikola. Clouds would roll in off the mountains and then there would be a sparkling break of pure sunshine that lit everything up in a surreal way. The light and atmosphere was unlike anywhere I have been before. It made the gorgeous island landscapes sparkle!

This is the little lagoon directly behind the Kona Shore watercolor landscape painting I posted a couple of days ago. It looked absolutely prehistoric and untouched but it was actually right next to the snorkel and boat rental cabin. Back from a great week in Hawaii! We stayed on the big island near Kona and saw lots of unbelievable scenery. I didn’t get a chance to paint as much as I’d hoped but I’ll post a few of the plein air landscapes that I managed to fit in between Mai Tais. Every year we take a trip up to Charlevoix in May with 2 of our best couple friends. The boys play golf, some ladies shop, and I wander around with my painting gear, capturing little glimpses of what Michigan must have been like before we paved it over with cement. This firey bush caught my eye in a park between Petoskey and Harbor Springs. Michigan has almost every type of landscape: lakes, trees, dunes, fields, farms, cities. It should keep me busy for years!

Last winter we spent a week at a friends winter home in Carefree, Arizona near Phoenix. The western landscape was very different from anything I had ever painted before. Itook me a few days before I produced something that even resembled what I was seeing. This scene was actually the view from our friend’s patio at the Boulders.

Every single view near Yellowstone takes your breath away. As we drove the roads winding through the mountains, I was constantly screaming at my sister Beth, “Stop here!  No, wait, here!” She was so accomodating. She’d calmy park the car, get out her little chair and settle down with a book while I frantically tried to capture the beauty all around us. I’m going off to exotic places to paint for the next week so I thought I’d post some watercolor landscape paintings that I have done on past trips. This bright little clapboard house hugged the train tracks in beautiful downtown Dillon, Montana. It refused to succumb to its dingy surroundings and the pride of ownership demanded attention!

It was an absolutely beautiful weekend here so I HAD to go out and paint. Everytime I hit the back roads I think that it will be the last time of the season. This pretty farmstead was dripping in light and shadow-my favorite scenario. Roxy sat quietly next to me but suddenly started barking out of control. I looked up and a huge old cow was looking at her from across the road. It was her first time so close to a bovine and I think it freaked her out. With her herding heritage, you’d think she’d try to round it up, but noooooo……

Peter was our model at figure drawing class yesterday. This a watercolor painting sketch from one of his 20 minute poses. Its a bit loosey-goosey but these quick studies are very helpful in learning to paint what you see, NOT what you know.

Somehow my real husband has disappeared and a strange new one has appeared. Ever since he retired, John has become a gardening freak. With the help of friends, he has created some absolutely beautiful gardens. This is a quick sketch of a little corner of one of his flower beds. He is providing me with a lot of inspiring floral material to paint!
