This watercolor painting will also be available thru the Circle of Art fundraiser for Food Gatherers on May 17. I painted it sitting on a step on one of the main streets in Naples, Florida. Plein aire paintings can be quite a challenge when you do them in public. Everyone who comes by has to sneak a look. Sometimes they ask to take a peak, other times they just belt out their opinion loud enough for everyone to hear.  It used to really fluster me but I have become used to the process. Most people are very kind and encouraging and I can always use that!

And Food Gatherers could use you. Click on the Circle of Art website in the next couple of weeks and see if there is a piece of art you can’t live without!

We just returned yesterday from a week in the sun. It was wonderful and gave me a whole new outlook on life after dealing with this long, crummy Michigan winter. I brought both my watercolors and pastels down but really concentrated on watercolor landscape sketches. This little outdoor cafe was near our condo and caught my eye every morning. I loved the pattern the umbrellas made against the bright bushes in the background.

Pienza

Pienza is a beautiful Tuscan town that Mary Beth and I visited in our tour of the Chianti region of Italy. We both just adored this little jewel of a city. We wandered down a side street and into this small rustic cafe that felt like it could have been from the 18th century. Then we checked out the walls–they were full of photos of movie stars who had recently shot a movie in the area. I guess you really can’t get away from it ALL…

Visit my website to see more watercolor paintings of Tuscany. What a great holiday gift they would make!

I absolutely love to travel. And one of the very best things about visiting far away places is finding inspiring new views to paint. I always bring my watercolors on my travels and usually paint quick, small landscape studies. Last spring we flew out to San Diego and stayed nearby in Carlsbad. This Mexican restaurant was right next to our condo. It sparkled in the California light.
