After we spent a week or so exploring Barberino, we ventured out to the other nearby Tuscan towns to paint. They were all beautiful in their own unique and fascinating ways. Montepulciano is well known for its wonderful red wine but is also a lovely spot for watercolor paintings. We wandered around and checked out each street in the small town. The reference photos helped me live the beauty of that area when I painted Italian watercolors back in my studio.

John and I spent a wonderful weekend in Cleveland a while ago. We visited the art museum and a couple of other exhibits and had some marvelous meals at unique little restaurants. I was pleasantly surprised at what an interesting, cultural and beautiful city it is. We walked the streets downtown and I shot a lot of reference photos to use for pastel paintings later in my studio. This scene really caught my eye. I loved the contrast of blue versus orange and modern versus old, and the sparkling lights were like icing on the cake!

I would love to do more plein air pastel landscapes in cities, but it is awkward to set up, and a little daunting to have hundreds of critics strolling by your easel!

Via Toscana

Watercolor painting 9 inches x 13 inches  SOLD

Please contact me if you are interested in this or similar artwork.

I just finished this watercolor painting of a small side street in one of the little towns we visited when I traveled to Italy a few years ago. I went with 2 artist friends and experienced my lifetime dream of living and painting in a small Tuscan village for 3 weeks. Every morning we would wander til we found a place that interested us. We’d paint Tuscan landscapes til noon, stop for a fantastic lunch, nap for awhile and then go back out and paint til dinner. My idea of pure heaven.

I’m looking back with new eyes at some of my original photos from that time. I have been playing with composition and color in an attempt to capture the “feeling” of the place, not an exact replica of it.
