I’ve been hard at work on my Saline commission and haven’t been able to work on any new paintings this week. I thought I’d post this bargain “oldy but goody” watercolor landscape from a vacation I took a few years ago. “Maids of the Mist” is a beautiful fountain that was originally made for the World’s Fair in Chicago but found a home in St. Joseph Michigan in 1892. I was atracted by the sparkling white water against the dark green foilage of the trees behind. I also liked the idea of the old fountain contrasted with the modern farm storage in the background.
The Side Door Gallery is having a reception Friday night for our Ann Arbor Pastelists show. 6-8 pm in downtown Dexter. Stop by if you can!

Our friends in Sylvania, Ohio have one of the most beautiful backyard gardens I have ever seen. Almost every square inch is filled with gorgeous flowers, shrubs, paths, walls and fountains. They have created “room” after “room” of amazing floral displays and they are expanding every year. And best of all: they allow me to wander the property and paint watercolor landscapes to my heart’s content! I’ve painted this path 3 times now and hope to continue to study it in the future…

John and I traveled to Louisville last summer so that I could make sketches and photographs for a commission I had received from a couple down there. We visited with friends and ate at fantastic restaurants and, while John played golf, I wandered around the city. The historic architecture is fantastic and the downtown area felt very much like an old Southern city in the 1900′s. I especially liked the avenues of opulent Victorian homes. This fountain bubbled happily in the middle of a picturesque boulevard. It was 100 degrees in the shade where i sat to paint this watercolor painting.

I’ve finally started working on Tuscan watercolors again. My friend, Susan, and I visited Italy last year and I have a lot of images swirling in my head, waiting to be painted. This beautiful fountain was in the a square near the center of Prato. We’d walk by it 2 or 3 times a day. In the morning, the square would be filled with mamas and their bambini, in the afternoon, kids fresh out of school would congregate there, and in the evening it was alive with young people partying. And its been there for hundreds and hundreds of years!
