Pastel landscape painting of a stone path in a garden.
Pastel painting 9 inches x 12 inches
I found this sweet little path at one of our garden sites and knew I wanted to capture it in a pastel landscape painting. I loved the way the dappled sunlight fell on the rocks and plants. Our garden painting group has already amassed quite a lovely series of images for our summer show. I have posted them on a Picasa website for viewing purposes. Check them out at:
Click on the album images and you will be able to see various artists’ paintings of each site. It is really interesting to see the different styles and views that each artist chose.
Plein air watercolor landscape painting of a road in the hills of Montana.
Plein air watercolor painting 7 inches x 9.5 inches $100
Another watercolor landscape from our trip to Bonanza Creek Country Ranch in Montana. We had a great cabin, perched on a hill, that looked down on the little road leading to the stable. The view was fantastic. The walk up, after a hard day in the saddle…not so much. It was cloudy much of our time there and quite a few flood watches, which is unusual for them. One day after an all-day ride, I sat on our front porch and did this watercolor painting of the road and the mountains in the distance.
Plein air watercolor landscape painitng of a stand of pines on a hill in Montana
Plein air watercolor painting 9.5 inches x 7 inches $100
Here’s another watercolor landscape from our wonderful trip to Bonanza Creek Country Ranch this June. Every cabin is secluded and surrounded by Montana landscape. One morning I sat on our deck and worked on a quick watercolor painting of the pines and hill behind our place. It was so pristine and quiet…

Plein air watercolor landscape painting of a rock garden surrounded by hostas
Plein air watercolor painting 9.5 inches x 7 inches $100
One more watercolor landscape from our latest garden site. It was my last watercolor painting of the day and I had really loosened up on this quick sketch. The only thing I didn’t catch was the little line of water cascading over the rocks…
Plein air landscape painting of a rock garden in front of a home.
Plein air watercolor painting 9.5 inches x 7 inches
The light shining through the silhouetted trees attracted my attention at this lovely home. I had to paint quickly because the heat that morning was overwhelming. But that kind of weather can actually be a good when doing watercolor landscapes. The washes and layers of color dry quickly, which helps me avoid creating pools of muddy color. Sometimes my mind and hands work faster than the medium allows. I get excited to get all my thoughts down before the previous layer has dried enough to accept another pass. Watercolor paintings take a bit of patience and forethought…and sometimes I have it…and sometimes I don’t!
It’s a friggin blizzard outside so I thought I’d do a little summer pastel paintings to warm me up! Nothing like bright garden sunlight and shadows to chase away the winter blues…
Pastel landscape painting of a sunlit river filled with rocks.
Pastel painting 11 inches x 17 inches
This is the second pastel painting I did while demonstrating at Art Walk. It was kind of disconcerting to be painting with so many art lovers milling about and talking. People came into my booth and chatted for a while, and when I went back to my painting, I had completely forgotten what I was doing and why. It was a new level of concentration for me.
I was pretty happy with the outcome of this pastel landscape. It reminds me of the breathtaking river I came upon one sunny morning in Louisville, KY where we were visiting friends.
Plein air pastel landscape painting of a colorful fall tree and barn.
Pastel painting 11 inches x 8.5 inches
Yeah! What a beautiful weekend for plein air pastel painting! Crisp blue skies and cool weather here in Michigan. I loved my time in Italy painting watercolors, but I was really pining to get back to a juicy pastel landscape. This farm just south of my hometown Saline fit the bill!
After I get my feet wet with pastels again, I will be painting a pet portrait commission that I received this week. Really looking forward to capturing this sweet Borzoi puppy! Let me know if you have an animal buddy who is yearning to be a model…

Another pastel landscape scene from the shores of Lake Michigan. It’s amazing how the color of the water and landscape changes at different times of day. In fact, it changes by the hour. After spending an 90 minutes or so on this small pastel painting, the view in front of me didn’t look at all like the one on my easel. The water had become much lighter and the shoreline in the distance a dark, midnight blue…

I sat on the deck the other morning a painted a pastel landscape of the new garden John planted last year. It’s coming up beautifully and every new plant is a luscious, colorful and welcome addition. He doesn’t think of himself as an artist, but I beg to differ!
