I’m heading down south looking for some warm weather and it reminded me of the plants and flowers I love to paint. This floral pastel hits close to home. Ever year we buy potted geraniums to adorn our deck and every year, right around August, they start to loose their luster. I actually find them much more interesting when they are crumbling and on their way out, than I do when they are all perky and pristine. I really liked the close, cropped composition of this piece, and was especially taken with the bold stripes of the chair in the background.

I painted this watercolor portrait of one of my good friends after our 3-week painting trip to Italy a couple of years ago. Actually, it’s the second rendition. Watercolor is such a fickle medium. Sometimes you end up with an image that is nowhere near what you imagined it could be. On the second try, I had nothing to lose so I was willing to take some chances. I painted more loosely and was not so tied to “reality.” And, I was able to leave the white areas alone and not fill them with useless detail. Part of what I love about watercolor as a medium is the ability to suggest and imply without going overboard in the description. The viewer can then finish some of those unfinished areas in their own mind.

We have a beautiful bush of Annabelle Hydrangeas and when it blooms every summer, I cut lots and lots of flowers. I fill every vase I have and place them all over the house and deck. They are my favorite flower and I love to paint them in pastel. Haven’t quite been able to capture them the same way in watercolor but i could paint floral pastel paintings all day…

AHhhhhh….Nothing like summer on the patio! I painted this little pastel painting one morning last week. Didn’t have time to go out plein air painting but this pastel artist had to get something on paper! I was drawn to the dark silhouette of the chair and tables against the psychedelic green lawn. This will be a nice memory when winter closes in on us in December…

Every year our backyard bursts out in purple and lavender blooms to herald the coming of spring. I love lilacs almost as much as hydrangeas so I decided to paint the ever present vase of them on our kitchen table. But, like most of my work, the real subject of this pastel painting is light. The way the sunlight streamed through the window and lit up the vase was the real attraction for me.
