Da La Romita (From La Romita)

Plein air watercolor landscape painting of an old wall in an olive orchard in Italy.

Plein air watercolor painting   10  inches x 7  inches   $150

Please contact me if you are interested in this or similar artwork.

I’ve done quite a few pastel and watercolor paintings of this view in the olive orchard near La Romita. The light and the scene itself seemed to change completely depending on the time of day. I believe this one was done in the late morning. Below is another version of the same place, from a little farther back, that I did in pastel. This painting was done from a late afternoon photo reference and will be in my upcoming exhibit. I’ve noticed that all of my paintings of Italy seem to be in the same color palette, no matter what the medium…

San Gemini

Plein air watercolor landscape painting of the Italian hill town of San Gemini

Plein air watercolor painting   6.5  inches x 10.5 inches   $150

Please contact me if you are interested in this or similar artwork.

Many of the hill towns of Italy are perched precariously on the edges of mini-mountains in the rolling Umbrian landscape. When they were built centuries ago, these castle-like cities were the first line of defense against the town’s enemies. You can see for miles and miles from almost any point on the ancient walls. It is totally breathtaking. For this watercolor painting, I sat on an adjacent hill and painted San Gemini’s outer structure, with the small farms and villas in the distance. This painting of Italy will always remind me of the unbelievable beauty of the country of my heritage…

Fountain Gargoyle

Plein air watercolor painting of a gargoyle in a New Orleans fountain.

Plein air watercolor painting   9.5 inches x 7 inches     $100

Please contact me if you are interested in this or similar artwork.

I did this watercolor painting in the same New Orleans courtyard where the stone goddess lives. There were gargoyles all around the fountain wall, and I thought it’d be a hoot to paint one of them. The water flowing from his mouth was a real challenge to get down on paper…

Arrancia (Italy show preview peak!)

Posted in All, Italy, Orchards, Pastels  by Jill

Pastel painting of an extreme close up of oranges on a tree in sunny Italy.

Pastel painting 28  inches x 14 inches

Please contact me if you are interested in this or similar artwork.

I’ve been talking about the pastel paintings I’ve been working on for my upcoming show at the River Gallery for months now, but haven’t posted any. Y’all probably don’t think they even exist. I thought I’d post one that I just finished last week as a little preview of the exhibition.

I’ve been working on a lot of paintings of Italian buildings and scenery but had the urge to explore some of the beautiful orange trees in the Umbrian region I visited last year. I especially wanted to capture the feeling of bright sunlight hitting the fruit. This piece is reminiscent of some of my earlier Orchard paintings but with a Mediterranean twist! The pebbly surface of the rust-colored primer I worked on, helped to give the texture that you see in the old stone wall.

Palm Study

Posted in All, Landscapes, Pastels, Plein air  by Jill

Plein air pastel painting of palms and shadows against a wall.

Pastel painting 5.5 inches x 6.5 inches

Please contact me if you are interested in this painting or similar artwork.

John’s back from Florida now too, YEA!! And so are all of my pastel paintings. He drove down and back and carted all of my art supplies with him. I’ve been photographing all of my artwork and adjusting the computer files. There has to be at least 30 or 40 paintings. I’ll be posting some over the coming weeks.

This was a quick study out from our condo lanai. I really liked the shapes and colors of the palms and the shadows they cast against the stucco walls. Whenever I had a spare moment, I was painting, either in pastel or watercolor. The colors down there are amazing!

Plein air watercolor landscape painting of a palm tree and balcony in Spain

Watercolor painting 6 inches x 7.5 inches $80

Please contact me if you are interested in similar artwork.

When my family visited Spain a while ago, I didn’t have much time to paint. There were just too many wonderful cities and restaurants to visit! But I did fit in a few watercolor landscapes while hanging around the pool after long days of sight seeing.

One more plein air watercolor painting of our friend’s garden. These geraniums were perched jauntily on the garden wall and caught the bright sunlight perfectly. I especially liked the way they blooms were highlighted against the dark red maple in the background.
